It won’t exactly lead us back to Planet of the Apes. But in what could presage a major transformation in humankind’s approach to animal rights, a New York judge has virtually granted legal status reserved for humans to a pair of chimpanzees, marking the first time in history that a non-Homo Sapien species is being recognized with such rights.
