Commission chairperson Visalakshi Nedunchezhian said there are more instances of divorce because of ego clashes and problems involving impotency.
"Many foreign countries have made counselling and medical checks compulsory for marriages. Tamil Nadu will be the first state in the country if the government implements the proposal. This will also reduce the number of divorce cases in the state."
For instance, she says, a girl recently approached the commission for a divorce saying her husband did not reveal that he had been diabetic since childhood. In another case, a woman complained that she wanted a divorce as her husband is earning less than that of her salary.
"There are several cases of men who suppress impotency before marriage. We need more counsellors to equip people mentally and physically for a happy married life. The marriage should be allowed after producing a certificate that they have attended premarital counselling and undergone medical tests," she said.
Admitting that implementation of these proposals would be a Herculean task, Nedunchezhian said it would help people having lasting relationships. "Some parents think their son or daughter will become 'normal' after marriage. But there are more chances of the issue getting worse after marriage."
Accusing the television serials as the root cause of the family problems, she urged the government to set up a censor board for TV serials along the lines of movies. She wants a ban on reality shows where divorced couples present their stories.
