India secures release of Jesuit priest Fr Alexis Prem Kumar from captivity Afghanistan

CHENNAI: India has secured the release of Jesuit priest Father Alexis Prem Kumar who had been in Taliban captivity in Afghanistan since June last year.

"Delighted at securing the release of Indian Jesuit priest Father Alexis Prem Kumar from captivity in Afghanistan," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on Sunday.


Father Alexis Prem Kumar, 47, hailing from Kodaikanal Tamil Nadu, was working for the welfare of refugee children in western Herat province when he was abducted by six Taliban militants on June 2 last year.


Modi also tweeted: "Have spoken to Father Alexis Prem Kumar. Informed happy family of Father Alexis Prem Kumar of his safe return after 8 months in captivity."


Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa had sought the intervention of the Prime Minister for the safe release of the priest.
