PM to NRIs at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: India is full of opportunities now

NEW DELHI/GANDHINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday morning inaugurated the 13th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas at Gandhinagar's swank Mahatma Mandir.

More than 4,000 delegates have arrived for the 13th PBD, the world's largest annual gathering of people of Indian origin aimed at enhancing networking and reinforcing commercial linkages.

There are 25 million people of Indian-origin residing outside India.

The event is being held in Gandhinagar on January 7-9 to mark the centenary of India's "sarva sreshtha pravasi Bharatiya", or foremost Indian diaspora member, Mahatma Gandhi's return to the country from South Africa.

The Mahatma Mandir is a sprawling complex spread across 60,000 sq mt.

Addressing the 13th edition of meet Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the Prime Minister said that "100 years ago, one 'NRI' returned to India and today one Gujarati NRI welcomes entire overseas Indian community."

"There was a time when professionals in India went to distant lands to explore new possibilities. Now India awaits you with opportunities," the PM told the NRI delegates.

"I want to tell you that India is full of opportunities now," PM Modi added.

Here are the highlights of the PM's speech:

"Let's recall the thoughts and message of Gandhiji, it is relevant today for solving problems confronting all countries," the PM said.

* Indian community is admired all around the world. It is not due to their money but their values

* World is seeing India with immense hope and optimism: PM @narendramodi at inauguration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015

* Whenever someone living abroad finds out that an Indian will be his neighbour, he becomes very happy

* Be it the most developed nation or the poorest one, every nation is looking at India today

* I have met more than 50 world leaders in the short span that I have been given this new responsibility. All the world leaders I met expressed desire to partner with India.

* I put forth the idea of Yoga day in the UN and 177 countries out of 193 were keen on co-sponsoring it.

* We have so much to give to the world. What is needed is the confidence in ourselves.

* PIO and OCI have been merged. Everyone will get the same benefits. I know the problems you faced. That is why visa on arrival facilities are being made available for several nations.

* There is a different strength when we meet our own people and share our joys, sorrows. It is a source of great energy. There is one more issue that I am sure you are concerned about and that is the rejuvenation of Maa Ganga.
