The beauty of Indic religions -Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and others -is that they don't require that you abandon your earlier religion for a new one," says Birks professor of comparative religion of M c G i l l University Arvind Sharma. He was speaking at the session on Relevance of Gandhian Philosophy over the century at Mahatma Mandir on Friday . Sharma said the Mahatma believed it was important that one understand and imbibe the essence of other religions for one's spiritual fulfillment. Here, he explained the difference between horizontal and vertical religious conversion. "In horizontal conversion, people hop between religions after abandoning the earlier one. In vertical conversion, one stays rooted to a culture and imbibes the essence of all religions for spiritual fulfillment."
