Border Roads Organization to hand over non-sensitive border roads to NHAI, state PWDs

NEW DELHI: Border Roads Organization (BRO) will soon hand over around 2,800 km of national highway stretches in border states to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), road ministry or state PWDs, so that the organization can focus only on strategic projects. BRO has also proposed transfer of 47 more roads totaling 4,300 km to these agencies.

Records accessed by TOI shows that the director general of BRO wrote to road transport ministry in November mentioning its willingness to transfer the new set of roads. The road secretary has asked ministry officials to take action and forward the proposed list to the PWDs for getting their comments and no objection certificate.

So far as the first set of roads are concerned, northeastern states have a major chunk of it around 1,983 kms. Unhappy with the performance and execution of highway projects by BRO, the National Security Council had recommended setting up of a separate organization to take over the non-border strategic road-building responsibilities of BRO.

Subsequently, a new organization - National Highways Connectivity Company Limited - has been set up exclusively for construction non-strategic roads in the border states.
