ACB registers record number of graft cases in 2014

AHMEDABAD: The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) created a record this year for the maximum number of cases in the history of the agency and also registered the highest recoveries. The amounts recovered crossed Rs 1crore-mark for the first time. The agency attributes the success to more aware citizens and newly-opened communication channels to report graft.

According to ACB officials, the earlier record was 225 cases in 1996-97. Ashish Bhatia, director, ACB, said that 2013 was considered the most successful year in past 15 years with 224 cases. "However, 238 cases were lodged this year that is the highest since the agency was set up in 1963. The recovery amount has also gone up from Rs31.17 lakh in 2013 to Rs 1.33 crore this year," he said.

Explaining the phenomenon, Bhatia said that many factors were at work - the toll free number that brings 20% of the total cases, better response to social networking, and instant messaging platform where the victims send proofs in the form of audio or video clips and photos, besides crackdown on the middlemen and raids at the places from where the maximum number of complaints were received.
