Americans shuffled into polling stations across the country on Tuesday to elect lawmakers to the 435-member House of Representatives and a host of state legislatures and governorships, but national and world attention trained on the 100-member Senate, called the most exclusive and influential club in the world because of its power to weigh in on US foreign policy.
