BJP wins race for speaker's post in Maharashtra assembly, Shiv Sena, Congress withdraw their candidates

NEW DELHI: BJP has won the race for speaker's post in Maharashtra assembly with Shiv Sena and Congress deciding to withdraw their candidates.

On Tuesday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had appealed to all political parties to facilitate a unanimous election of the speaker.


Haribhau Bagde of BJP, Vijay Auti of Shiv Sena and Gaikwad of Congress had filed nominations for the speaker's post.


Fadnavis had on Tuesday met Congress leaders Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Prithviraj Chavan and state chief Manikrao Thakre, in a bid to persuade the party to support BJP's nominee.
