"It is ironic that Modi has no time to appoint a full-time defence minister for the country," said Pawar. The NCP chief said around 30,000 people living near the border had left their homes due to the shelling. "At a time he should take stock of the situation at the border, Modi is trying to ensure that the BJP wins more seats in Maharashtra," he added. The veteran leader said "several voices" were giving contradictory statements on the crisis. "Our soldiers are capable of giving an answer to Pakistan," said Pawar. He was campaigning for NCP candidates Jyoti Kalani (Ulhasnagar) and Nilesh Shinde (Kalyan east).
The international border in Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed one of the heaviest exchanges of fire in recent times.
