Two people, including a woman, involved in the racket have been arrested while another accomplice is still at large.
Police said the rape survivor, who is from Kauria in Kotdwar, and her child went missing under mysterious circumstances on April 2. The neighbour, Sunita Devi, allegedly took her to a secluded spot on the pretext of getting medical treatment for her son. There she was offered a drink laced with sedatives. After she fell unconscious, she was sold to a Bijnor resident, Jaipal. As the child was not given the required medical attention, he died a day or two after she was sold, police said.
The woman's husband, a rickshawpuller, alerted the police, who traced her at Bijnor and rescued her. When the efforts of her husband, who is a rickshaw puller, to trace them went in vain, he informed police about the incident. He suspected the involvement of neighbour Sunita Devi and her son Gajendra in the incident.
