Bhatkal (33) is the key suspect in the attack at the popular Pune eatery on February 13, 2010, that killed 17 people and injured 64 others. Investigating agencies identified Bhatkal through CCTV footage from the bakery, revealing his and the IM's involvement in the blast.
A senior police officer from the ATS, Pune, confirmed Bhatkal's arrest. "We will produce him before the court on Friday," the officer said. The ATS had already obtained a warrant from the Shivajinagar court for Bhatkal's arrest in connection with the German Bakery blast case. The warrant was produced before the court in Thane seeking permission for the arrest, the officer said.
The officer said Bhatkal was currently lodged at the Thane jail after completion of his police custody in connection with the July 13, 2011, blasts in Mumbai. "We arrested him in the bakery blast case after an identification parade."
"The Pune crime branch, local police and the bomb detection and disposal squad will be deployed in the court premises," the officer added.
Bhatkal was arrested from the Indo-Nepal border on August 28 last year, after being on the run for almost eight years. He is said to be involved in a series of bomb blasts across the country.
