Doctors in all government and private hospitals observed a "black day" and sported black bands to express solidarity with the agitating staff of the Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi Memorial Medical College (GSVM) in Kanpur. The doctors were gearing up for a one-day countrywide strike announced by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The Uttarakhand wing of IMA has also decided to submit a memorandum to chief minister Harish Rawat, requesting him to take up the issue with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government. "Thorough the memorandum, we will request the CM to communicate our message to the UP government," state secretary of IMA's Uttarakhand unit, Dr D D Chaudhary told TOI.
Chaudhary said all 22 IMA branches in Uttarakhand were roped in to organise peaceful demonstrations across the state on Wednesday to protest against the high-handedness of the UP police and the ruling Samajwadi Party.
"Our doctors burnt effigies of SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, his son Akhilesh Yadav and some other people including the accused MLA (Irfan Solanki) and cabinet minister Azam Khan. These peaceful protests were held in all important cities and towns in the state," Chaudhary added.
Dr Meenakshi Uniyal, additional project director in the Uttarakhand AIDS Control Society, said an "inhuman" treatment of this kind against medicos, who by the virtue of their profession are life saviors, cannot be tolerated.
Roorkee-based pathologist Dr Surendra Kaushik said more than 100 government and private doctors in the city held demonstration in front of freedom fighter Chandra Shekar Azad's statue.
