Sreekumar writes to PM about 2002 riots

AHMEDABAD: Retired DGP R B Sreekumar has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, complaining about his government's inaction in probing the 2002 riots, and asking him to direct the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs to submit documents and evidence relating to the activities of Army deployed in Gujarat during the 2002 communal riots.

He also complained that riots survivors felt let down by the Centre, which didn't take any initiative to inquire in the role allegedly played by chief minister Narendra Modi during the riots. tnnSreekumar also reminded Singh of how the Centre dragged its feet when the inquiry commission sought correspondence between then president K R Narayanan and then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The former top cop claimed that the riot affected people have repeatedly said that the Centre has not parted with evidence and data on the duties performed by the Army and Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMC) in Gujarat to maintain law and order. These details are very important for the Nanavati Commission and the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT).
