These candidates from all over the country had not submitted their election expenditure results in the previous election that they had contested in — either to the assembly or to the Lok Sabha.
The EC has informed all the chief electoral officers that the candidates had been debared as per section 10A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The chief electoral officers will have to pay special attention to detect these individuals if they try to contest the 2014 elections. All the returning officers have also been intimated the names of disqualified persons. According to the rules, the candidates have been debarred from contesting the polls for a certain number of years. However, all the 1921 candidates cannot contest the 2014 polls.
An analysis of the names reveals that the most number of candidates who have been debarred are from Chattisgarh (259). The states from where most number of candidates have been debarred are Maharashtra (191), Uttar Pradesh (189), Madhya Pradesh (180), Odisha (138), Bihar (126), Jharkhand (117).
The number of candidates from other states who have been debarred are Harayana (107), Jammu and Kashmir (48), Kerala (55), Karnataka (52), Mizoram (5), Meghalaya (6), Manipur (8), Punjab (9), Puducherry (10), Rajasthan (66), Sikkim (7), Tamil Nadu (76), Tripura (13), West Bengal (86), Goa (12), Assam (94), Arunachal Pradesh (1), Andhra Pradesh (13), Delhi (9), and Gujarat (44).
