AISSF (Peermohammad) chief Karnail Singh Peermohammad alleged that senior functionaries of DSGMC at different times had not allowed witness Mukhtiar Singh to depose against the senior Congress leader, whose name had figured for allegedly instigating a mob against Sikhs during the anti-Sikh riots, in the court, despite recording his statement with the Nanawati Commission.
"Mukhtiar is currently an employee of DSGMC. He had testified about Kamal Nath's role in leading a mob during the attack on Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib, before Nanawati Commission," Peermohammad told TOI on Tuesday.
Stating that he had a copy of Mukhtiar's statement, wherein he had claimed of seeing Kamal Nath leading the mob, senior advocate and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader H S Phoolka said, "In my understanding, Mukhtiar is ready to give statement, but for that there has to be a case in the court or before the special investigation team (SIT)." Phoolka said it was up to DSGMC to file a case against Kamal Nath or there should be a SIT where Mukhtiar could record his statement.
He said besides Mukhtiar, a reporter of an English language daily, had also given a statement before Nanawati Commission about Kamal Nath leading the crowd. The reporter had also recorded his statements with Ved Marwha and Mishra commissions. "Now a conspiracy is also being hatched to prevent the Delhi government from setting up an SIT to save the Congress leaders," Phoolka said.
Peermohammad alleged that former DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna was playing politics in cahoots with the Congress leaders, while current incumbent Manjit Singh GK had his own vested interests in hiding Mukhtiar.
Vehemently denying the claims of Peermohammad, GK said Mukhtiar Singh was not yet mentally prepared to depose against Kamal Nath. "We are trying to persuade him to reveal the truth before the court to give some succour to the riot victims. We are preparing him mentally," said GK, adding that once Mukhtiar agreed, they would file a complaint against Kamal Nath and initiate proceedings. He blamed Peermohammad for raking up issues without the status.
On the other hand, Sarna said he didn't know whether Mukhtiar had witnessed Kamal Nath leading the mob to the Rakabganj gurdwara. "During my tenure as DSGMC president, neither anyone told me that Mukhtiar was a witness nor I stopped anyone from telling truth," he said.
Peermohammad said he wondered why everyone was silent on the issue despite the fact that Mukhtiar, who lived within the premises of Gurdwara Rakabganj during 1984, filed an affidavit with the Nanavati Commission stating that "a big mob led by Congress leader Kamal Nath attacked the gurdwara at 11 am, raising anti-Sikh slogans and pelting stones. The police, following instructions from the Congress leader, fired several rounds at the gurdwara. An old Sikh man, who tried to pacify the crowd, was burnt alive. His son, who ran to his rescue, met with the same fate."
He said a photographer of an English daily also gave an affidavit to Justice Nanavati stating that Kamal Nath had led a 4,000-strong crowd that attacked Gurdwara Rakabganj. "Earlier, Mukhtiar was in control of Sarna and now, he is in the control of DSGMC and SAD (Badal)," he alleged.
He said AISSF would collect affidavits from 1984 victims, survivors and witnesses containing information of Congress party leaders and workers, who were involved in the genocidal attacks on the Sikh community in 1984 and had not been charged.
