Leaders of DMDK, PMK and MDMK kept away from Modi's rally because BJP leaders have so far not bothered to get into specifics like sharing of seats and constituencies among the alliance partners. This has put off even MDMK leader Vaiko, who has already announced a tie-up with BJP.
DMDK leaders said the party demanded 20 seats from BJP, but they were yet to get a feedback from the saffron party. "BJP leaders have so far been evasive about the issue of seat sharing. They expect us to join the front before finalizing the seats," said a party leader. It is learnt DMDK is keen on Villupuram, Arani and Sriperumbudur constituencies, which PMK has also demanded.
Even BJP national leaders who met DMDK youth wing leader L K Sudheesh in Delhi did not give any commitment on the number of seats, he said. DMDK is keen on avoiding a repeat of 2011 assembly elections in which it ended up getting only 41 seats from AIADMK , though it wanted to contest from 80 seats. "Senior AIADMK leaders coaxed us to join the front without discussing seat sharing. In the end, we were betrayed," he said.
Though DMK and Congress continue to make efforts to bring Vijayakanth on board, he is more inclined towards joining BJP. DMDK, while contesting alone in all the 39 constituencies in Tamil Nadu in the 2009 parliamentary elections, wreaked havoc with the prospects of the two Dravidian majors — AIADMK and DMK — in 17 constituencies . It polled over a lakh votes each in more than ten constituencies .
"Talks with DMDK will continue after the public meeting ," senior BJP leader L Ganesan told TOI.
