BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday announced Rs 1,000 crore interim assistance towards relief and rehabilitation of cyclone and flood victims of Odisha.

A media release from the PMO said the total quantum of assistance would be "finalised after consideration of the on-the-spot assessment report of the inter-ministerial central team". Additionally, the Prime Minister sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to each seriously injured persons from his national relief fund .

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had planned to meet the Prime Minister and the Union home minister in New Delhi on Monday to seek expeditious release of the central assistance. He cancelled his visit after the Prime Minister's announcement.

Odisha had in two phases sought Rs 5,832 crore from the Centre after the October 12 cyclone followed by heavy rain and floods. Twenty one persons died as Phailin hit the coast on October 12 night with a wind speed of 220 kmph. The cyclone inflicted extensive damage in nearly 21 districts. Ganjam district was the worst hit. Heavy rain followed the cyclone that continued for nearly a week. Ganjam district again bore the brunt of severe floods, in which 23 persons died.

The Centre, which had sent disaster response teams and helicopters to help the state in relief and rescue operations before the cyclone, sent the home secretary to assess the damage after the calamity. It also sent an 11-member inter-ministerial team for spot verification of the damage.
