Rajasthan polls: BJP puts faith in several losers, lists 176 names

JAIPUR: The BJP walked a mile ahead of its biggest rival Congress by declaring the names of 176 candidates in its first list for the state assembly polls scheduled for December 1.

Despite the list including several new faces along with names of three former parliamentarians while 9 sitting legislators including a suspended party member were dropped - the list did not spring any major surprise. While on the face of it, changes seem aplenty, 66 legislators have been repeated while over 30 candidates, who faced defeat in 2008, have been given another chance. There are 26 ST candidates and 30 SC candidates while 20 are women and 35 youngsters. Party's chief whip in the state assembly Rajendra Rathore, who contested from Taranagar has been moved to Churu while Prabhu Lal Saini, who currently represents Hindoli will contest from Anta in Baran.

Former parliamentarians - Subhash Mehria, Kailash Meghwal and Srichand Kriplani - will contest from Lachmangarh, Shahpura and Nimbahera respectively. As expected, Vasundhara Raje will contest from Jhalrapatan while Gulab Chand Kataria will contest from Udaipur.

Erstwhile royal member from Jaipur Diya Kumari, who recently joined the party, has been given a ticket from Sawai Madhopur.

The much awaited list includes the name of Ghanshyam Tiwari from Sanganer and Prahlad Gunjal from Kota (North) - both known as detractors of state president Vasundhara Raje. Gunjal, a popular Gujjar leader, was not given a ticket by the party in 2008 but this time around will contest against Congress's Shanti Dhariwal.

Though the party's first list came three days after Congress's first list, BJP on Tuesday announced its candidates for 18 of the 19 assembly constituencies in Jaipur district, 9 out of 10 constituencies in Jodhpur, 7 of the 8 assembly constituencies in each Ajmer district and Udaipur district and 6 of the 7 seats in Bikaner district.

It has announced its candidates on all seats in 15 districts including Kota, Nagaur, Chittorgarh, Dungarpur, Banswara, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Jhalawar and Jaisalmer. The party, which is keen on sweeping the tribal belt of the state has announced its candidates for 26 seats of the 28 assembly constituencies in Udaipur division. MLA who have been dropped are Promila Kundara (Chaksu), Ramesh Chand Meena (Todabhim), Anil Jain (Khanpur), Gyarsaram Koli (Bayana), Babulal Bairwa (Kathumar), Raveendra Singh Bohra (Rajkhera), Kansingh Kotdi (Siwana), Sukhram (Baseri) and suspended BJP legislator Hanuman Beniwal (Khinvsar).

According to sources, with in the party the senior state leaders have tried to tread a safe path by repeating most candidates including those who lost the last elections. "In most cases, the margin of loss was small and in several cases, only 2,000 to 3,000 votes. The party has given them all another chance as several of them have also won elections before,'' admitted a senior party official.
