On November 6, chief minister Virbhadra Singh had to cancel his trip to Bharmaur in Chamba district as the state chopper remained grounded because of bad weather. As a large number of people were waiting for him in Bharmaur, Singh inaugurated various projects over the phone. He also addressed the people through the mobile phone of forest minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri who was present at the venue.
Lahaul and Spiti MLA Ravi Thakur was forced to do the same on Friday, after he failed to reach Spiti to inaugurate a cattle shed at Lari village. Due to bad weather, Thakur opted to inaugurate the shed over phone as well.
The state government planned to lay the foundation stone of new projects and inaugurate those completed in tribal areas before the snow came but weather played spoilsport with high altitude areas already dealing with freezing cold. Lakes in high mountains and rivers have started freezing. Closure of Rohtang Pass following heavy snowfall has already hit supply of essential commodities to Lahaul and Spiti district.
Keylong town of Lahaul-Spiti district on Saturday recorded lowest minimum temperature of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius while Kalpa in Kinnaur district recorded minimum temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius. In Shimla, minimum temperature recorded was of 4.1 degrees Celsius, Dharamshala 8.1 degrees Celsius and Dalhousie 3 degrees Celsius.
During last 24 hours minimum temperature in the state decreased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the higher areas received fresh snowfall with rain in the lower areas. Shimla meteorological centre has predicted dry weather conditions till November 15.
