SHIMLA: Issue of shepherds being robbed, while on their journey to plains from mountains, at different parts of state was finally brought into the notice of Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh. Taking note of this, chief minister directed the director general of police to take appropriate measures to check this menace besides ordering an inquiry in this regard.
In the beginning of summer, shepherds head for the green pastures located in the high mountain areas while with the onset of winter they head for the plains. During their migration from one place to other, some people steal their sheep and goat.
Forest minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri and vice-chairman, Himachal Forest Development Corporation Kewal Singh Pathania on Monday met chief minister Virbhadra Singh to inform about the plight of shepherds who are migrating to plains from high hills for winters.
They informed the chief minister about the threat posed by robbers and other anti-social elements, to shepherds, who are involved in robbing them of their sheep and goats during their movement from one place to another particularly in Mangla, Khera, Indora, Chhatari and other areas of Chamba and Kangra besides other districts. They said that they have received many complaints from the community regarding incidences of theft.
Bharmouri and Pathania requested chief minister to direct police authorities to provide protection to this community as livestock was their main avocation.
On November 7, forest minister had demanded licensed guns for the protection of shepherds besides police protection during their movement to ensure the safety of their flock. Bharmouri had asked for the police protection to all shepherds in the state during their movement from one place to another in view of threat posed by robbers and other anti social elements. He had asked all the Superintendents of Police to provide police protection to all the shepherds by deputing flying squads within the jurisdiction of their districts.
