Government will look into CBI's legality, Manmohan Singh says

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said government will look "promptly" in the legality issue of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raised by the Gauhati high court.

"Some questions have come up recently about the legality of the CBI. Our Government will look into this seriously and promptly," PM Manmohan Singh said while inaugurating a conference of the CBI and state Anti Corruption Bureau on Common Strategies to Combat Corruption and Crime.

"The government will do all that is necessary to establish the need for the CBI and its legitimacy, and protect its past and future work," Manmohan Singh said. "This is a matter that will undoubtedly have to be considered also by the highest court in the land," the Prime Minister said.

"Fight against corruption should not only be confined to investigation and prosecution of corruption related offences once they happen," Manmohan Singh said.

A division bench of the Gauhati HC last week questioned the validity of India's premier investigating agency, saying that it was legally not a police force.

The Supreme Court November 9 stayed the Gauhati high court's order declaring the CBI unconstitutional and fixed December 6 as the next date of hearing.

CBI is celebrating its golden jubilee and the conference is being organized as part of the celebrations.

The conference, being held at Vigyan Bhawan, was first organized in 1961 with an aim to provide investigating agencies of the country engaged in fighting corruption a common platform to share information, discuss issues of common interest and evolve strategies to combat corruption. This is the 20th conference in this sequence.
