Though the former minister in the UPA-I stopped short of voicing his "obvious option" after his differences with the Congress, on Saturday Rao said there is wave in favour of BJP leader Narendra Modi in the country and Haryana isn't untouched.
While the three-time Congress MP refused to elaborate his next step his close aides told TOI that the Yadav leader from southern Haryana is in touch with senior BJP leaders at national level.
He won't rush to formally resign from the party until he has the alternate plan in place. "There is only one option before him and that is BJP at national level, which is the alternate to Congress. But for him the focus is Haryana where he wants to become the alternate to chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda," said a trusted associate of the leader.
Sources said that a formal announcement to go with the BJP may come in the next couple of months when he holds a big rally in Jhajjar.
They added that though there were some efforts on part of the central leadership to iron out differences, the Congress MP has been maintaining that there is no room for talks. Singh and his supporters feel the central leadership won't go against the incumbent leadership in the state despite increasing opposition to the CM within the party.
After launching Haryana Insaaf Manch, a so-called non-political front to counter Hooda, his younger daughter had moved an application for registration of a new political outfit named Haryana Insaf Congress. The MP had claimed that he had nothing to do with this and it was his daughter's decision.
"The party leadership in the state and at the Centre is aware of his motives. It will be better for party to clear the air. His continuation in party is not doing any good, it's rather creating more confusion," said a senior Haryana Congress leader from the Hooda camp.
