Narendra Modi takes swipe at PM Manmohan Singh, says we want Sardar Patel's secularism

NEW DELHI: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that "Sardar Patel was secular and we want the same secularism that Sardar saheb believed in".

Taking a swipe at PM Manmohan Singh, Modi said that Sardar Patel was secular but that that didn't stop him from building a temple. Sardar Patel's secularism was not for vote bank politics, Modi said.

The Gujarat CM also said that it was wrong to associate Sardar Patel with any single party. "Leaders don't belong to any party, they belong to the country," Modi said.

Narendra Modi was speaking at a function to lay the foundation stone of the 'Statue of Unity' of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

"We want the world to see the 'Statue of Unity' as a symbol of India's glory and rise," Modi said. I want people from all over the world to see this statue, Modi added.

The ceremony was held near Sadhubet at Kevadia colony, close to the main Sardar Sarvoar dam.

LK Advani, a former deputy prime minister, was the chief guest at the function.

The statue, when finished, will have a height of 182 metres and will be the world's tallest structure of its kind.
