Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation chief gets HC breather

VADODARA: Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) chairman Vipul Chaudhary, facing a no-confidence motion against him, got temporary relief on Friday as the Gujarat HC stayed the requisite meeting called a day later to discuss the issue.

Chaudhary, who also heads Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy, was facing ouster after 14 out of 17 board members of GCMMF, which markets India's biggest milk brand Amul, called the meeting to discuss the no trust motion. The court has fixed November 11 for the next hearing

On Friday, Chaudhary moved the high court pleading stay on the meeting saying there is no provision of no-confidence motion in The Gujarat Co-operatives Societies Act 1961.

"It has no provision of moving a no-confidence motion against the chairman of the co-operative society. We had pleaded for a stay order on these grounds, which was granted," Chaudhary's lawyer, V C Vaghela, told TOI.

With Chaudhary moving high court, the battle to wrest control of the Rs 13,735 crore apex marketing body of all the dairy unions of Gujarat is set to get embroiled in legal and political maneuvering.

Chaudhary has been eyeing the National Dairy Development Board chairmanship. But his troubles started after he met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Gujarat. Chaudhary, who is with the BJP, had attempted to get close to Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and was working out a win-win formula with his one time political mentor and ex-Gujarat CM, Shankersinh Vaghela.

His detractors in the federation's board found this as an opportunity to get back at him. Three senior BJP leaders were instrumental in setting the agenda to oust Chaudhary from GCMMF for which a meeting was held at Gandhinagar. Chaudhary is also facing allegations of Rs 1864 crore worth irregularities at the Mehsana Dairy. GCMMF has alleged the mismanagement of the dairy, which is a member union of the federation, has resulted in high debt even as milk procurement is falling every year.
