BSF also recovered one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 44 rounds, two .32 bore pistols with two magazines and 13 rounds, three mobile phones, Rs 610 in Pakistan currency and an Rs 100 recharge coupon after the encounter on Friday.
BSF inspector general AK Tomar said on Saturday that a patrolling party spotted suspicious movement across the border fence near Mullankot border outpost on Friday night and challenged the intruders. They fired on the BSF jawans who shot dead three of them in retaliation.
Tomar said that it was believed that due to bumper poppy crop in Afghanistan, Pakistan-based smugglers were desperate to push the narcotics into India.
He said the BSF would try to identify the Pak smugglers on the basis of intelligence inputs. Their bodies would be sent for autopsy and handed over to police. "We will also talk to Pak Rangers asking them to receive the bodies," he said.
The IG has also announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh and commendation certificates to the BSF party that conducted the operation. This is believed to be one of the largest operations on Indo-Pak border in Punjab in recent times.
Tomar said the BSF would also investigate the Indian smugglers who were to receive the consignment from their Pak counterparts. "They might have fled during the encounter but we will find them," he said.
During this year the BSF had seized 281kg heroin, including around 130kg seized in the past two months.
